Remote Work Makes a Comeback in South Africa

Remote work is gaining ground again in South Africa after declining over the past two years, according to Pnet’s latest Job Market Trends Report.

Remote Jobs on the Rise

Between March and September, the share of remote and hybrid job listings climbed to 3.6% of all advertised positions.
While still below pandemic-era highs, the increase signals a renewed appetite for flexible work arrangements.

2023 and 2024 were the years of the great return to the office,” said Anja Bates, Head of Data at Pnet. “But more employers now see flexibility as key to attracting and keeping top talent.”

Top Roles for Remote Work

Remote and hybrid opportunities are expanding beyond IT, with the most common flexible roles including:

  1. Software Developers (13%)

  2. Personal Assistants (12%)

  3. Data Analysts (12%)

  4. Customer Support Agents (11%)

  5. Business Analysts (9%)

  6. Business Developers (8%)

  7. Systems/Network Administrators (8%)

  8. Sales Representatives (3%)

  9. Department Managers (2%)

  10. Accountants (2%)

The strongest growth is seen in Admin, Finance, and Business Management roles, showing that flexibility is no longer just for tech workers.

AI Skills in High Demand

Pnet also reports surging demand for artificial intelligence (AI) expertise — up 352% since 2023 and 77% year-on-year between the first halves of 2024 and 2025.

Most AI-related roles are based in Gauteng (58%) and the Western Cape (24%), with 2% offering remote options — enabling local professionals to access global opportunities.

“AI is creating new roles, not replacing workers,” Bates noted. “Companies investing in AI training and skills are positioning themselves for greater innovation and competitiveness.”

Outlook

Remote work remains strongest in tech, but flexibility is expanding across multiple sectors.
Bates said this trend shows that employers are rethinking how work gets done:

“Remote work is becoming a strategic tool to attract and retain good people.”
