Frequently asked question

What is VAT in Monthly Accounting?

Understanding and preparing for the eventuality of VAT is critical for every small to medium size business who is subject to VAT or on the verge of becoming a VAT Vendor. VAT stands for Value-Added Tax. It is an indirect tax on the consumption of goods and services. The government raises revenue by requiring some vendors to register for VAT.

The vendor must charge VAT on certain goods and services, known as output tax. VAT is only charged on taxable supplies. Taxable supplies are those charged at the standard rate of 15% or the zero rate of 0%. Some goods and services are either zero-rated or exempt from VAT.

The vendor can deduct VAT charged to it (input tax) when it makes taxable supplies. In some cases, a vendor may claim a deduction (notional input tax) on a supply from a business that is not registered for VAT.

VAT is non-cumulative. This means you can get a credit or deduction for VAT paid earlier in the production and distribution chain. The vendor must pay the difference between the output tax and the input tax. If the input tax is higher than the output tax, the vendor can claim a VAT refund.

VAT is charged at each stage of making and selling products. It is based on the price of goods and services. You also pay VAT when you import goods or services.
