How to maintain your fitness this festive season

It is so easy to say "it's been a long year, i just want to enjoy my holiday". We all know what happens when you return after the holiday, you have regret and a load of weight you now need to shed.

So how can you enjoy your holiday without feeling guilty or coming back with regrets?

Staying active and maintaining some level of fitness and awareness is the solution to your wellbeing enjoying your holiday without regrets.

Here are six tips to stay fit this holiday season

1. Drink enough water

Drink about 6-8 glasses of water per day. If you struggle with drinking "glasses" of water, then get yourself a 1.5-2litre water bottle that you take everywhere with you (a glass of water = 250ml).

Many people have these water bottles that they fill in the morning and then all you need to do is ensure you drink it all before the day is out and this is the easiest way to manage your water intake. The more physical activity or sun exposure, the more water you will need to consume.

2. Ensure you sleep enough

It is so easy to get lost in the festivities of the holiday and forgetting to maintain enough sleep. What are the benefits of good sleep?

  • Can help you maintain or lose weight
  • Improves concentration and productivity
  • Maximises your athletic performance
  • Strengthens your heart
  • Affects the methabolism of sugar and diabetes risk
  • Lack of sleep leads to depression
  • Health sleep = healthy immune system
  • Poor sleep is linked to inflammation
  • Bad sleep affects emotions and your social interactions

Amidst the excitement and late-night celebrations, it’s important not to neglect your sleep.

Aim for 7-8 hours of quality sleep each night to support your overall wellbeing. Sufficient rest allows your body to recover, boosts your immune system, and helps regulate your appetite.

3. Make time for physical exercise

Ensure you incorporate regular exercise. A 30minute exercise routine most days of the work will be enough. Fitness goals can still be maintained in the holiday despite the increase in "holiday eating", be active will help you burn it off.

4. Plan ahead

If you want to maintain healthy habits then this will require planning. If you plan in advance then this will help you avoid those moments where you act on impulse because your body is starving and craving a energy spike (which often leads to grabbing the unhealthiest thing in the store).

5. Watch your eating habits

Eating all the festive treats is part of the holidays and there is no reason why you should be depriving yourself of this.

Instead, rather look at portion sizes and practice mindful eating as you watch your consumption throughout the day. Ensuring you eat regularly to avoid feeling starved will help you with being able to control portion sizes and avoid overeating.

6. Encourage activities with your family

This is a great way to stay fit and at the same time get to maintain those strong connections with your loved ones.

So as you can see it is easy to stay fit this festive season while still having a great time with your family and friends as you enjoy the festivities.
