Official Petrol Price for March 2026

The Department of Petroleum and Mineral Resources has confirmed that new fuel prices will take effect from Wednesday, 4 March 2026.

Fuel prices are increasing across the board, mainly due to a sharp rise in international oil prices linked to geopolitical tensions between the United States and Iran. While the rand strengthened during the review period, it wasn’t enough to fully offset higher oil costs.

Fuel Price Increases (Effective 4 March 2026)

Fuel Type Price Change
Petrol 93 +20 cents per litre
Petrol 95 +20 cents per litre
Diesel 0.05% (wholesale) +62 cents per litre
Diesel 0.005% (wholesale) +65 cents per litre
Illuminating Paraffin (wholesale) +44 cents per litre
LPGas (Gauteng) +23 cents per kg
LPGas (Saldanha Bay) +26 cents per kg

Why Prices Went Up

  • Oil prices surged from below $60 to over $80 a barrel, with most of the spike occurring at the end of February

  • International product prices for petrol, diesel, and paraffin all increased

  • The rand strengthened on average, reducing fuel price pressure slightly

  • Average exchange rate improved to R15.9959/$ from R16.3054/$, lowering fuel costs by up to ~19 c/l

  • Despite this, oil price increases outweighed currency gains

The Slate Levy remains at 0.00 c/l, providing some relief.

95 Petrol R20.10 R20.30

Diesel 0.005% (wholesale) R17.95 R18.60
Illuminating Paraffin R12.10 R12.54
LPGas (per kg) R34.74 R34.97

Coastal Pump Prices

Fuel February March
93 Petrol R19.20 R19.40
95 Petrol R19.27 R19.47
Diesel 0.05% (wholesale) R17.08 R17.70
Diesel 0.005% (wholesale) R17.19 R17.84
Illuminating Paraffin R11.08 R11.52
LPGas (per kg) R31.48 R31.72
LPGas (Saldanha) R33.58 R33.84

Bottom Line

  • Petrol rises are moderate, but diesel sees steep increases

  • Oil prices are the main driver, not the rand

  • Transport, food, and logistics costs could feel pressure in March

  • Further oil price spikes could influence April fuel prices
