SARS has its eyes on you - remote workers and foreign employers need to start preparing

National Treasury has proposed to align the obligations of foreign employers to the same standard as that is held and practiced for local employers. This will mean the foreign employer would be responsible for paying over the PAYE for the employee.

This will have ramifications for businesses hiring locals to do remote work. There will be some logistical issues with the implementation of this. Currently there is no requirement or method for foreign companies to pay PAYE for employees. SARS might soon implement a system to ensure this becomes possible and a requirement for foreign employers.

The trend of remote work has been on the increase since the Covid-19 Pandemic. It has benefited many during a pandemic and a period that without remote work would have had an even worse economic impact.

We will keep you posted throughout the year as we get news on this topic.
