SARS is coming after taxpayers in South Africa hard with new ‘masterstroke’ move
The South African Revenue Service (SARS) is improving tax compliance. They are working with private tax professionals to fight tax evasion. This plan aims to help SARS find and catch tax dodgers. It uses experts' knowledge of complex tax systems and loopholes.
The initiative responds to growing pressure on the government to boost tax collection and ensure fair contributions from citizens. By adding these specialists, SARS aims to perform better audits. They also want to create focused enforcement strategies for a fairer tax system.
The move has gained attention for its possible effectiveness. It also affects the relationship between public institutions and private sector workers.
By working together, SARS and tax experts can build a stronger system for tax compliance. This will encourage a culture of accountability among taxpayers. This partnership could be a model for other revenue services worldwide. It shows the value of combining public resources with private expertise to reach shared goals.
The South African Revenue Service (SARS) made a significant announcement regarding a new tender opportunity. This tender seeks to engage a group of tax consulting firms. They will provide their expertise and services for five years. The decision to seek external consulting firms underscores SARS's commitment to enhancing its operational efficiency and ensuring compliance with tax regulations.
Tax Consulting SA says this will give the service and Commissioner Edward Kieswetter “immediate access” to private tax consultants. These consultants can offer insights into tax evaders and help close gaps that they might miss.
These measures will greatly improve tax authorities' ability to find and catch people and businesses that evade taxes. By improving how we track financial transactions and review tax returns, the taxman can find mistakes and issues.
These may show that someone is not following tax laws. This proactive approach helps deter tax evaders. It also encourages a culture of accountability among taxpayers.
Moreover, the introduction of these initiatives will offer additional resources and support for managing intricate tax structures that often arise in today's globalized economy. Many businesses operate across multiple jurisdictions, leading to complex tax situations that can be challenging to navigate.
Tax authorities can help taxpayers by offering specialized assistance and guidance. This support helps people understand their obligations and stay compliant with the law. This support may include access to expert advice, educational resources, and streamlined processes for reporting and filing taxes.
We do not know how many members will join the panel.
Each panel member can submit resumes for at least 88 tax specialists. These specialists can be Junior or Senior tax professionals. The tender includes all types of taxes and many technical and compliance-related items.
SARS will be better able to handle complex tax issues. This includes forensic audits and corporate restructures.
The same tax practitioners who have often complained about SARS not doing enough can now join 'team SARS.' They have also been frustrated by poor service delivery.
Tax Consulting stated that the panel will give SARS more power.
The appointed tax practitioners can communicate with taxpayers and traders by phone, in writing, and through virtual meetings. They can raise assessments, conduct audits, and collect taxes owed to SARS. This helps fulfill the revenue authority’s mandate.
The South African Institute of Taxation (SAIT) says that private sector experience helps tax collectors. It teaches them “where to look and how to ask the right questions.” This seems to be the approach for SARS.
"This new initiative uses specialized tax consulting and compliance services from the private sector. This means that taxpayers who break the law will have a higher chance of getting caught. Tax aggressive schemes will also face better technical scrutiny," said Tax Consulting.
