To Braai or not to Braai

Every South African braai must have chakalaka, a spicy condiment consisting of carrots.

Chakalaka compliments the meat and starch. The surge in the prices of carrots has made this condiment less affordable.

In March the cost of carrots rose by 23% which was the largest increase of any single ingredient. This means carrots are 53% more expensive than a year ago (if you factor the 30% increase over the last year).

The pain doesn’t end there. This year you will see an average 10% increase on food prices. The increase in food prices affects lower households the worst as they spend most of their income on food. Now might be the time to start that veggie garden.

The competition commission is investigating several cases that have negatively affected consumers over the last 2 years, one of the cases being the price of carrots.

Ironically carrots are most expensive in Springbok coming in at approximately R59 per bunch compared to R47 a bunch in Johannesburg.

There are many factors that have contributed to higher food prices:

-        Higher fuel costs

-        Decrease in the use of rail

-        Weakening rand

-        Power outages

-        Supply chain vulnerabilities
