What It Takes to Live a Decent Life in South Africa

Recent data from the Pietermaritzburg Economic Justice and Dignity (PMBEJD) Group and the Living Wage South Africa Network (LWSA) shows that South Africans need to earn between R6,778 and R15,000 per month to live a truly “decent” life.

The Cost of Survival vs. Living

  • A decent life means being able to afford food, electricity, transport, and other essentials, while maintaining dignity and stability.

  • The National Minimum Wage (NMW), even after its March 2025 increase to R28.79 per hour (around R5,297 per month), still falls at least R1,500 short of covering basic needs.

  • Most households rely on a single breadwinner supporting around four dependents, which deepens financial strain.

Poverty Wages

  • At R5,297, the income per household member is R1,324, below the poverty line of R1,634 per person.

  • PMBEJD calls the minimum wage a “poverty wage”, arguing it erodes dignity, reduces productivity, and traps workers in poverty.

What’s a Real Living Wage?

  • PMBEJD believes R6,778/month is the bare minimum for dignity.

  • LWSA argues the true living wage is R12,000–R15,000/month, based on how South Africans themselves define a “good life.”

  • Research by UCT found that financial security means more than survival: it allows households to save, avoid debt, and make meaningful life choices.

Why It Matters

  • While the NMW is legally binding, it is not enough to meet real living costs.

  • Employers often resist higher pay, citing costs, but global studies show financially secure workers are more productive, motivated, and take fewer sick days.

  • The International Labour Organisation (ILO) highlights that wages should support an adequate standard of living, not just survival.

Bottom line: South Africa’s minimum wage may meet the law, but it does not meet people’s needs. A real living wage—closer to R12,000 to R15,000 per month—is necessary for dignity, security, and long-term growth.
