How Much It Costs to Start Your Child at a Top Private School in South Africa

Private school education in South Africa is becoming increasingly expensive. In 2026, some top private schools charge more than R350,000 per year, and even Grade R fees can exceed R130,000 annually.

This comes despite Cyril Ramaphosa announcing renewed efforts to improve public education and confirming that Grade R is now compulsory, with higher subsidies for early childhood development planned.

Why Grade R Is So Expensive

Grade R is part of pre-primary education for children turning six. At many top private schools:

  • Annual tuition alone can exceed R100,000

  • Extra costs such as development levies, deposits, and registration fees can add thousands more

  • Boarding is usually not available at this level

Some schools offer sibling discounts, reducing fees when multiple children attend the same school group.

What You Actually Pay

In addition to tuition, parents may need to budget for:

  • Deposits (often equal to one term’s fees)

  • Development or building levies

  • Application and enrolment fees

  • Optional extras like aftercare, transport, lunches, and sports programmes

These extras can add tens of thousands of rand per year to the headline fee.

Crawford College Sandton Johannesburg, GP R117,200
Bishops College Cape Town, WC R97,200
Crawford College La Lucia Durban, KZN R94,400
Clifton School Durban, KZN R85,000

These figures cover tuition only and exclude deposits, levies, and optional services.

The Big Picture

  • Private schooling costs are rising rapidly, even at entry level

  • Grade R can cost as much as a university degree per year

  • Extras and once-off fees significantly increase the total cost

  • Early financial planning is essential for families considering private education
