Live Sport on a Budget: The Cheapest Tickets in South Africa
South Africa has a strong sporting culture, with rugby, soccer and cricket among the most-watched. But what you pay to get into a stadium varies enormously. Depending on the sport, the teams and when you buy, tickets can start at just R40 or run well past R1,000.
Soccer: the Betway Premiership
The country's main soccer competition is the Betway Premiership (the Premier Soccer League), with 16 clubs each representing a different area. The same teams also play in shorter tournaments such as the Nedbank Cup and MTN8.
Prices depend heavily on the stadium and who is playing. A general access ticket for the upcoming Premiership match at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg currently costs R80.
Rugby: the United Rugby Championship
The URC is the top level of competition for several South African teams. It features sides from South Africa, Ireland, Scotland, Wales and Italy, with matches played in all five countries. In South Africa, games are hosted in Durban, Cape Town, Johannesburg and Pretoria.
This is where the cheapest tickets are. For upcoming matches, "earlybird" tickets cost R40 in Durban and R50 in Pretoria. Prices rise as the match approaches, and knockout games at the end of the tournament are usually priced higher because the stakes and the quality of the teams are higher.
Why comparing prices is tricky
It's common across South African sport for ticket prices to climb as an event gets closer, often peaking on the day. Popular teams and important matches also cost more, as venues capitalise on demand. That makes a clean like-for-like comparison between tournaments difficult. An earlybird price in one sport isn't directly comparable to a general access price in another.
International events
LIV Golf. The event at Steyn City in Johannesburg in 2026 drew a crowd of more than 100,000 people and is returning. Early tickets for 2027 sold out soon after release. They started at R774 for one-day general access, with higher prices for better vantage points and multi-day passes. More tickets will go on sale closer to the event, though prices haven't been announced. Sports, Art and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie called it a strong showing for South Africa, saying it was about more than golf: economic opportunity, job creation and inspiring the next generation of athletes.
Kyalami 9-hour. This endurance motorsport event in Gauteng is far cheaper than other international events, with tickets from R100, rising to R150 for all-access.
The expensive end: Springboks rugby
Springboks matches are among the most popular and most expensive live events, with tickets regularly selling for over R1,000. They're often sold out, which shows organisers can charge high prices and still fill the stadium. The cost has caused public backlash, with many arguing it's too steep for a national team. The Springboks have said they will review their ticket pricing ahead of the 2027 season.

Tips for saving money
- Buy early. Prices usually rise toward match day.
- Avoid the big fixtures and knockouts if you're watching your budget.
- Look at the local leagues. Premiership and URC games offer the lowest entry prices.
The bottom line
If you want the cheapest live sport in South Africa, rugby's URC earlybird tickets at R40 are hard to beat, with Premiership soccer close behind at R80. Just remember that prices move with timing and demand, so check the current price before you plan.
