What is an IRP5 - what you need to know
The IRP5 is a tax certificate that discloses the total earnings and deductions of an Employee for a Tax year – 1 March – 28 February
The deadline for the processing of IRP5’s is 31 May every year.
The certificate reconciles all earnings and deductions for the tax year. It furthermore serves the purposes as a cross-check to ensure all taxes were declared correctly. Should there be differences then SARS will query and could also perform an audit.

How does the IRP5 work
IRP5 certificates pull through to your income tax return when tax year of assessment. Once the IRP5 is submitted to SARS then it is pre populated in your tax return. The pay as you earn (PAYE) that you paid on the income to which the IRP5 relates will count towards your tax paid for the tax year.
What if I have more than one IRP5
If you have more than one IRP5 then one thing to keep an eye out for is whether the two incomes push you into another tax bracket. Otherwise, all taxes paid should offset against your tax bill.
How do I get my IRP5 from SARS
You are entitled to ask your employer or the entity giving you the IRP5 for a copy. The IRP5 should be issued and sent to you. The fact that the tax certificate pulls through to SARS is secondary to the fact that you are entitled to be in possession of this certificate.
If this fails, contact us or book a meeting with SARS.
Does IRP5 expire
An iRP5 can't expire. It is a record and reconciliation of taxes paid to SARS and can thus not be attached to a timeline of validity but rather a document of fact.
What if my Employer can't give me my certificate
You can contact the person who handled the Employer reconciliation or otherwise contact SARS.
What is an IRP5 used for in SARS
The certificate has several purposes:
- to make a declaration of income you earned
- to make a declaration of the taxes you paid
- to make a declaration of the benefits you received
- to make a declaration of where you earned and who you worked for
